This historical café was opened in 1933 and since then has been a cultural landmark. Its name comes from the “Guarany” tribe, which inhabited the lands currently called Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia. This area is known for being the first coffee exporter of the world. The space was conceptualized by the architectRogério de Azevedo and the sculpture of the tribesman was completed by Henrique Morreira. Agostinho Barrias bought the lease in 1982 due to his addiction for old cafés, as well as Majestic, another historic café in Porto. His son Fernando now runs them both; he has been helping out since he was 18.
The specialities include “café de saco” specially brewed coffee, the recipe dating back to 1933. You should also try their “Rabanada” Portuguese french toast, pairing well with a glass of port. They also serve traditional meals but they are better known for their musical events with regular “Fado”, piano and violin concerts.
“Guarany” has been well known since its inauguration because of its love for music, it was nicknamed the ‘Musicians cafe’. It pioneered the first AC and fridge in a city in the 30’s and until this day all the traces of the past have been kept original since its opening. It is a true time machine packed with memories and being on “Aliados” it has witnessed several of the cities celebrations starting with end of the First World War and many more to come in the future.
