Tia Orlanda

Tia Orlanda

Aunt “Orlanda” is one of the only Mozambican restaurants in Porto, having been open for less than 10 years; it is quite popular with the locals, so popular that the Mozambican embassy regularly organises dinners here. On the weekends, I advise you book in advance.

The specialities here are varied and everything that “Tia Orlanda” touches has a motherly home cooked feel to it. She likes to ask people about their meal, obviously everyone says it’s delicious, and they are not wrong. The Mozambican curries vary depending on the availability of certain ingredients, and they are all delicious; “Muamba” an Angolan chicken curry, “Cachupa” Cape Verde bean stew (ordered in advance), “Cabrito” Kid (goat), “Vitela” Veal, “Frango” chicken, “Caranguejo” Crab, “Peixe e coco” Fish with Coconut, “Gambas” Shrimp and “Feijão com coco e cogumelos” beans with coconut and mushrooms.

Since Mozambique used to be a Portuguese colony I consider “Tia Orlanda’s” food also as authentic Portuguese, because you can experience flavours that have had Portuguese influence over the last 400 years. If you like curries, you should definitely try the Mozambican take, cooked by an authentic Mozambican mother. As well as “Tia Orlanda” being the matriarch of Mozambican cuisine in Porto she also has started an African souvenir shop two doors down from her restaurant, do not forget to take a look.
