O Antunes

O Antunes

This legendary place was inaugurated in 1965. It has always been kept in the same family, but originally owned by “António Antunes Fernandes”  hence the name of the restaurant, then it was passed on to his wife “Maria Antunes” when he died, and now it is being run by her son in law “Pedro Fernandes”. It is a quaint, picturesque restaurant that is reasonably priced.

Every day of the week there is a house speciality, Wednesday its the “Tripas” Tripe Bean Stew, Thursday it’s the “Cozido” boiled selection of meat with potatoes and vegetables, Friday its the “Rojões à Moda do Minho” Pork chunks cooked with boiled blood, potatoes and fried tripe and Saturday it’s the “Cabrito” Roasted kid. My personal favourite is the “Pernil” the Roasted pork shin, which is available every day of the week. To drink I would suggest the house speciality, “Espadal” (green rose), with the “Pernil” it goes down wonderfully. For dessert they have several options, all homemade , my favourite is the “Rabanada” Portuguese French toast, it has won a national dessert prize as the owner told me.

For a family restaurant that opened 51 years ago it has managed to maintain its traditional feel and cooking, as well as improving on the original recipes, never going down on quality and maintaining that needed family tradition. One of my favourite locations to eat pork chin, cooked in a wood fire oven.
