Salta o Muro

Salta o Muro

“Jump the Wall” opened in 1982 as a grocery shop. Only in 1988 they got a restaurant license. The reason for the name is because in 1982 the owner “Sr. António” placed a ladder in the back so dock workers could jump the wall and buy drinks. During 6 years they did this, until a coffee shipment was stolen and all access to the docks was cut off. This was the turning point when it became a restaurant.

There are no bookings so get there early. The specialities revolve around grilled fish. For starters ask for “Petinga” deep-fried baby sardines. On Fridays they make octopus and Saturdays they make “Caldeirada” fish stew. The owners “Palmira and António” have the best fish market contacts; therefore the freshest of fish is served. “Palmira” is said to be the quality control for picking the fish. My favourite choices include: “Dourada” sea bream;“Peixe Galo” Moonfish; “Robalo” Sea Bass. Ask them to bring out the fish and you can hand pick it. Some “Vinho Verde Branco” young white wine will pair perfectly with your fish.

This is one of the best fish spots in Porto. The “Moreira”family have perfected this art and they deserve total recognition. The fish is bought every day and consumed on the same day. Nowadays you don’t have to jump any wall to get there, the only possible hurdle is the time you need to wait for a table, virtue comes to those who wait, and it is definitely worth it.

Summary

This is one of the best fish spots in Porto. The “Moreira”family have perfected this art and they deserve total recognition. The fish is bought every day and consumed on the same day.
