“Restaurante Casa Nanda” has been open for 37 years, during all this period the owners have been the same. Dona Fernanda and Jose Canelas are the owners and before owning this restaurant they worked together for 18, they are both from a city in Portugal called “Arouca”. The service here is impeccable, and the people who work there are extremely nice, welcoming and hospitable.
The specialities include, “Bife de boi a cebolada” Ox steak served with onions. “Cozido a Portuguesa” Mixed selection of boiled meats (cow, chiken, pork) and vegetables served with rice. “Filetes de pescada com arroz de feijão” Battered Hake Filets served with their wonderful bean rice. “Peixe Galo com Açorda do mesmo” Grilled Dory served with “Açorda” breadcrumbs soaked in broth and seasoned with olive oil and garlic, a true delicacy of this restaurant. For desert you can order the “Aletria” a rice pudding style desert but made with noodles instead of rice, “leite Creme” the Portuguese version of the crème brulee, this particular desert stood out for me at this place because it was executed in a completely different way than normal but it tasted great, and last but not least the Seasonal Peach Salad which is so simple but works so well, I think their secret ingredient is Porto Wine, order it while you can, mostly during the summer. This place is slightly more expensive than normal for Portuguese prices but totally worth it, you end up paying around 15-20 euros per person.
This Restaurant was a true find for me, I will definitely be coming back several times. The food is amazing, the service is great, they have traditional dishes as well as uncommon dishes hard to find anywhere else and they surprised me in a good way. Its hard to find a restaurant these days that surprise you with their dedication and flavours, if you want to feel like a Portuguese mother is cooking for you visit Casa Nanda.
