Paderia Ribeiro

Paderia Ribeiro

This bakery is one of the best in Porto. It has been around for 150+ years perfecting their recipes. A great option for a light lunch or a mid-afternoon snack.

If I was to explain everything you could order, this whole book would turn into a Portuguese pastry food bible, so I will stick to my preferences. The “Empada” savoury pie, chicken, tuna or veal. The “Pastel de Chaves” veal pastry, be sure to ask if they are warm. “lanche Misto” cheese and ham brioche pastry is a classic worth trying.

If you feel like something more substantial, I normally opt for the “sandes de panado” a Portuguese version of the pork schnitzel in a sandwich. You can choose from the varied selection of bread on display. For a lighter option I ask for the turkey version. There is also a large selection of sweet pastries, you just need to walk inside and point to the one that is staring back at you. I suggest getting an assortment of miniatures so you can try more things.

This bakery has two other stores in “Foz” and “Matosinhos”. The central one being the oldest and the one I favour.

You always get quality products and the service is exceptional here; The staff go out of their way to fulfil your pastry desires. With a comfortable terrace, it is the best place in town to have a mid-afternoon snack, as well as think about the fact that someone a century ago was doing exactly the same thing as you.
