O Buraco

O Buraco

This is a landmark restaurant in Porto, the authentic cuisine coupled with their northern hospitality, have guaranteed them steady business for the last 40 years. They are so popular that they give themselves the luxury of closing for the whole month of August. It is best to go as early as you can, due to its popularity; as best dishes tend to run out towards the end of the service.

There are always several daily meat and fish options to choose from. I am proud to say that I could eat here every day and not feel like I am eating out, as the food is made by Portuguese mothers in the most home-made way possible. The classics here include: “Rojões”, pork chunks with tripe and boiled blood; “Arroz de Pato”, duck rice; “Tripas áModa do Porto” bean stew with tripe; They also have many fresh fish options on the menu, my personal favourite being the “Petinga” fried baby sardines and “Dourada” sea bream. In terms of home-made desserts take a look and pick your fancy, if there is “rabanada” Portuguese French toast, that’s what I go for.

Don’t be afraid to order what you like, if you make any mistakes the waiter will let you know what you are doing wrong immediately and tell you what you should eat and drink. This is one of the things I love about this place, when I eat here I normally let the owner suggest what’s good first and then make my decision, this also helps to get into his good graces.
