Confeitaria do Bolhao

Confeitaria do Bolhao

Bolhão Bakery is a traditional pastry shop, inaugurated in 1896. The owner Jose Rodrigues bought it through an auction in 1999, it had been abandoned for 10 years. Jose lived most of his life in Venezuela, as his parents, both Portuguese, moved there when he was very young.

This bakery is known for its sweet pastries and it has had a very important role in Bolhão food market history since most people would come here for a snack when they went shopping in the market. My favourite thing to eat here are the tarts; lemon meringue, passion fruit, lime, wild berries and strawberry. Definitely worth trying, you can also wash the pastry down with a fresh fruit juice or a coffee. Another traditional pastry to try is the “Pastel de Nata” custard tart they are also good here. Savoury options do exist but of standard quality as well as a restaurant on the bottom floor. I advise you to only come for the sweet pastries which are above standard while the rest is mediocre, but if you’re not much of a sweet tooth take a pick at the savoury options you have displayed as you walk in.

This is one of the oldest and most picturesque pastry shops in Porto and a very good option for an afternoon snack, before or after you visit Bolhão market which is opposite the pastry shop. All the ingredients here are fresh and all the products are made in-house, a historical part of Porto you should definitely not miss out on.
